The 2 Sisters Part 2

Then the old witch went on in the wrong direction, and the girl started afresh on her way home; but just as she got to where the oven stood, she heard that horrid old witch coming behind her again; so she ran as fast as she could to the oven and cried:

Sòa--lòe,老女術士iû-koh走m̄ tio̍h pêng,chŏ͘-gín-á to̍h koh 1遍ùi in tau hit pêng走--去,m̄-koh to̍h tī伊tú走到hang-pháng窯hia ê時,to̍h聽tio̍h hit ê恐怖ê老女術士iû-koh ùi伊kha-chiah後飛--過-來;só͘-pái伊to̍h chhui盡磅走去hang-pháng窯邊--á,大聲hoah講:

Nn̄g chí-mōe Hā-chi̍p

Sòa--lòe, lāu lú-su̍t-sū iû-koh cháu m̄ tio̍h pêng, chŏ͘-gín-á to̍h koh 1 piàn ùi in tau hit pêng cháu--khì, m̄-koh to̍h tī i tú cháu kàu hang-pháng-iô hia ê sî, to̍h thiaⁿ tio̍h hit ê khióng-pò͘ ê lāu lú-su̍t-sū iû-koh ùi i kha-chiah-āu poe--kòe-lâi; só͘-pái i to̍h chhui chīn-pōng cháu khì hang-pháng-iô piⁿ--á, tōa-siaⁿ hoah kóng:

“O Oven! Oven! hide me

So as the witch can’t find me,

For if she does she’ll pick my bones,

And bury them under the garden stones.”

我nā去ho͘ chhōe--tio̍h,伊to̍h ē chhńg我ê骨,

Koh kā我tâi tī花園á ê石頭ē底ut。」

“Hang-pháng-iô! Hang-pháng-iô--ah! Kă chhàng ho͘ hó,

Hō͘ hit ê lú-su̍t-sū chhōe góa bô,

Góa nā khì ho͘ chhōe--tio̍h, i to̍h ē chhńg góa ê kut,

Koh kā góa tâi tī hoe-hn̂g-á ê chio̍h-thâu ē-té ut.”

Then the oven said, “I am afraid there is no room for you, as another batch of bread is baking; but there is the baker—ask him.”

Hang-pháng窯to̍h ìn講,「真歹勢,我chia恐驚á無所在thang hō͘你bih,chit-má有另外1 phoe pháng tng teh hang;m̄-koh做pháng師傅tī hia,你去ka問。」

Hang-pháng-iô to̍h ìn kóng, “Chin pháiⁿ-sè, góa chia khióng-kiaⁿ-á bô só͘-chāi thang hō͘ lí bih, chit-má ū lēng-gōa 1 phoe pháng tng teh hang; m̄-koh chò-pháng-sai-hū tī hia, lí khì ka mn̄g.”

So she asked the baker, and he said, “Of course I will. You saved my last batch from being burnt; so run into the bakehouse, you will be quite safe there, and I will settle the witch for you.”

你kā我ê頂1 phoe pháng救--起-來,hō͘ in無臭火ta;só͘-pái你緊ka走入去做pháng間內底,你tī hia ē真安全,我ē kā你tàu處理hit ê女術士。」

I to̍h khì mn̄g chò-pháng-sai-hū, sai-hū ìn kóng: “Tong-jiân mā bô būn-tê. Lí kā góa ê téng 1 phoe pháng kiù--khí-lâi, hō͘ in bô chhàu-hóe-ta; só͘-pái lí kín ka cháu ji̍p-khì chò-pháng-keng lāi-té, lí tī hia ē chin an-choân, góa ē kā lí tàu chhú-lí hit ê lú-su̍t-sū.”

So she hid in the bakehouse, only just in time, for there was the old witch calling angrily:

“O Man of mine! Man of mine!

Have you seen my naughty little maid

With a willy willy wag and a great big bag,

Who’s stole my money—all I had?”

Chŏ͘-gín-á to̍h bih入去做pháng間,nā慢1脚步to̍h bē赴,因為老女術士chit-má人已經tī hia,氣phut-phut hoah講:

「Eh,cha-po͘人!Cha-po͘人!

你kám有看tio̍h我hit ê chiān-thâng ê細漢chŏ͘-kán-á

Kha-chhng花搖--leh搖--leh koh phāiⁿ 1脚大袋,

伊偷the̍h我ê錢,koh 1遍lóng總the̍h!」

Chŏ͘-gín-á to̍h bih ji̍p-khì chò-pháng-keng, nā bān 1 kha-pō͘ to̍h bē-hù, in-ūi lāu lú-su̍t-sū chit-má lâng í-keng tī hia, khì-phut-phut hoah kóng:

“Eh, cha-po͘-lâng! Cha-po͘-lâng!

Lí kám ū khòaⁿ tio̍h góa hit ê chiān-thâng ê sè-hàn chŏ͘-kán-á

Kha-chhng-hoe iô--leh iô--leh koh phāiⁿ 1 kha tōa-tē,

I thau the̍h góa ê chîⁿ, koh 1 piàn lóng-chóng the̍h!”

Then the baker replied, “Look in the oven. She may be there.”

And the witch alighted from her broomstick and peered into the oven: but she could see no one.

做pháng師傅to̍h ka ìn講:「看hang-pháng窯內底有--無,伊有可能bih tī hin。」

Chò-pháng-sai-hū to̍h ka ìn kóng: “Khòaⁿ hang-pháng-iô lāi-té ū--bô, i ū khó-lêng bih tī hin.”

Lú-su̍t-sū to̍h ùi sàu-chhiú téng thiàu--lo̍h-lâi, tham-thâu khì siòng hang-pháng-iô lāi; m̄-koh lóng bô khòaⁿ tio̍h lâng.

“Creep in and look in the farthest corner,” said the baker slyly, and the witch crept in, when——

Bang!——

Póng!

“Pê--ji̍p-khì, khì khòaⁿ siōng lāi-té ê kak-kak,” chò-pháng-sai-hū kan-kúi, án-ne ka kóng, lú-su̍t-sū to̍h pê--ji̍p-khì, sòa--lòe…

Póng!

he shut the door in her face, and there she was roasting. And when she came out with the bread she was all crisp and brown, and had to go home as best she could and put cold cream all over her!

But the kind, obliging little girl got safe home with her bag of money.

伊kā門tng hit ê女術士ê面關--起-來,女術士to̍h án-ne tī內底hang。等到伊hâm pháng做夥出窯ê時,kui seng-khu hông hang kah變咖啡色,koh酥酥脆脆,伊to̍h ài用siāng緊ê速度piàⁿ轉去厝,kā kui seng-khu lóng kô͘涼涼ê藥膏chiah ē-sái--chit。

Ah咱chit ê好心koh愛kâng tàu-saⁿ-kāng ê chŏ͘-gín-á,to̍h án-ne hâm伊hit袋錢做夥安全轉到厝。

I kā mn̂g tng hit ê lú-su̍t-sū ê bīn koaiⁿ--khí-lâi, lú-su̍t-sū to̍h án-ne tī lāi-té hang. Tán kàu i hâm pháng chò-hóe chhut-iô ê sî, kui seng-khu hông hang kah piàn ka-pi-sek koh so͘-so͘ chhè-chhè, i to̍h ài iōng siāng kín ê sok-tō͘ piàⁿ tńg-khì chhù, kā kui seng-khu lóng kô͘ liâng-liâng ê io̍h-ko chiah ē-sái--chit.

Ah lán chit ê hó-sim koh ài kâng tàu-saⁿ-kāng ê chŏ͘-gín-á, to̍h án-ne hâm i hit tē chîⁿ chò-hóe an-choân tńg kàu chhù.

Now the ill-tempered elder sister was very jealous of this good luck, and determined to get a bag of gold for herself. So she in her turn packed up a bundle and started to seek service by the same road. But when she came to the oven, and the loaves begged her to take them out because they had been baking seven years and were nigh to burning, she tossed her head and said:

“A likely story indeed, that I should burn my fingers to save your crusts. No, thank you!”

到chia來,chit ê pháiⁿ性地ê姊--á真怨妒伊有chit款好運,決心講ka-tī mā beh the̍h tio̍h 1袋金á。Só͘-pái to̍h換伊去款1 ê包袱á,mā照in小妹行ê hit條路去chhōe頭路,m̄-koh tī伊行來到hang-pháng窯ê時,hia ê pháng拜托伊kā in the̍h--出-來,因為in已經hông hang 7冬,差不多to̍h beh臭ta--去-ah,伊soah頭hàiⁿ-hàiⁿ--leh講:

「Siāng好是án-ne--lah,bē輸我to̍h ài為tio̍h beh救lín ê pháng皮,去燙tio̍h我ka-tī ê指頭á--leh。

Kàu chia lâi, chit ê pháiⁿ-sèng-tē ê ché--á chin oàn-tò͘ i ū chit khoán hó-ūn, koat-sim kóng ka-tī mā beh the̍h tio̍h 1 tē kim-á. Só͘-pái to̍h ōaⁿ i khì khoán 1 ê pau-ho̍k-á, mā chiàu in sió-mōe kiâⁿ ê hit tiâu lō͘ khì chhōe thâu-lō͘, m̄-koh tī i kiâⁿ lâi kàu hang-pháng-iô ê sî, hia ê pháng pài-thok i kā in the̍h--chhut-lâi, in-ūi in í-keng hông hang 7 tang, chha-put-to to̍h beh chhàu-ta--khì-ah, i soah thâu hàiⁿ-hàiⁿ--leh kóng:

“Siāng hó sī án-ne--lah, bē-su góa to̍h ài ūi-tio̍h beh kiù lín ê pháng-phôe, khì thǹg tio̍h góa ka-tī ê chéng-thâu-á--leh. Chin to-siā neh, góa chiah bô ài!”

And with that she went on till she came across the cow standing waiting to be milked beside the pail. But when the cow said:

“Little girl! Little girl! Milk me! Please milk me, I’ve waited seven years to be milked——“

伊講soah to̍h koh行--落-去,一直行到伊tú tio̍h hit隻khiā tī脚桶邊等人ka lu̍t乳ê牛á。

I kóng soah to̍h koh kiâⁿ--lo̍h-khì, it-ti̍t kiâⁿ kàu i tú tio̍h hit chiah khiā tī kha-tháng piⁿ tán lâng ka lu̍t-leng ê gû-á. M̄-koh gû-á kóng:

“Ko͘-niû-á! Ko͘-niû-á! Kā góa tàu lu̍t-leng! Pài-thok--leh, kā góa tàu lu̍t-leng! Góa tán lâng lâi kā góa lu̍t-leng í-keng tán 7 tang--a…”

She only laughed and replied, “You may wait another seven years for all I care. I’m not your dairymaid!”

And with that she went on till she came to the apple tree, all overburdened by its fruit. But when it begged her to shake its branches, she only giggled, and plucking one ripe apple, said:

“One is enough for me: you can keep the rest yourself.” And with that she went on munching the apple, till she came to the witch-woman’s house.

伊to̍h kan-na笑笑ìn講:「你koh等7冬mā無我ê代誌。我to m̄是你ê lu̍t乳工á ko̍h!」

伊講soah to̍h koh行--落-去,一直到kah hit叢蘋果樹頭前,he果子生kah siuⁿ chē,hō͘樹á kiōng-beh chih載bē-tiâu。M̄-koh tng-tong樹á ka拜托講,to̍h ài kā伊ê樹oe搖搖--leh ê時,伊to̍h kan-na ki̍h-ko̍k笑,koh bán 1粒到分ê蘋果,ìn講:

「我1粒to̍h有夠--ah,chhun--ê你ka-tī留--leh。」伊to̍h沿路蘋果pō͘ kah kha̍uⁿh-kha̍uⁿh叫,行去到女術士ê厝。

I to̍h kan-na chhiò-chhiò ìn kóng: “Lí koh tán 7 tang mā bô góa ê tāi-chì. Góa to m̄ sī lí ê lu̍t-leng-kang-á ko̍h!”

I kóng soah to̍h koh kiâⁿ--lo̍h-khì, it-ti̍t kàu kah hit chhâng phōng-kó-chhiū thâu-chêng, he kóe-chí seⁿ kah siuⁿ chē, hō͘ chhiū-á kiōng-beh chih-chài bē-tiâu. M̄-koh tng-tong chhiū-á ka pài-thok kóng, to̍h ài kā i ê chhiū-oe iô-iô--leh ê sî, i to̍h kan-na ki̍h-ko̍k-chhiò, koh bán 1 lia̍p kàu-hun ê phōng-kó, ìn kóng:

“Góa 1 lia̍p to̍h ū kàu--ah, chhun--ê lí ka-tī lâu--leh.” I to̍h iân-lō͘ phōng-kó pō͘ kah kha̍uⁿh-kha̍uⁿh-kiò, kiâⁿ khì kàu lú-su̍t-sū ê chhù.

Now the witch-woman, though she had got over being crisp and brown from the oven, was dreadfully angry with all little maid-servants, and made up her mind this one should not trick her. So for a long time she never went out of the house; thus the ill-tempered sister never had a chance of looking up the chimney, as she had meant to do at once. And she had to dust, and clean, and brush, and sweep ever so hard, until she was quite tired out.

Chit-chūn, sui-bóng kóng lāu lú-su̍t-sū í-keng bô chhiūⁿ tú ùi hang-pháng-iô chhut--lâi ê sî án-ne, hang kah piàn ka-pi-sek koh so͘-so͘-chhè-chhè, m̄-koh i iáu sī tùi só͘-ū ê sè-hàn lú-po̍k lóng chin hóe-tōa, mā hē koat-sim kóng choa̍t-tùi bē koh hō͘ chit ê phiàn--khì. Só͘-pái ū 1 tōaⁿ kài tn̂g ê sî-kan lāu lú-su̍t-sū lóng bô lī-khui kòe chhù; m̄-chiah chit ê pháiⁿ-sèng-tē ê a-ché kin-pún to bô-hoat-tō͘ chiàu i pún-té siat-sióng--ê án-ne, tham-thâu khì khòaⁿ ian-tâng lāi. Bô-hoat--i, i mā kan-na ē-tàng piàⁿ-miā chhéng eng-ia, piàⁿ chhù-lāi, lù mi̍h-kiāⁿ, sàu thô͘-kha, ti̍t-thàu kàu i kiōng-beh thiám--sí.

But one day, when the witch-woman went into the garden to bury her bones, she seized the moment, looked up the chimney, and, sure enough, a bag of gold fell plump into her lap!

M̄-koh ū 1 kang, tī lú-su̍t-sū khì hoe-hn̂g tâi kut-thâu ê sî, i to̍h thàn chit ê sè, tham-thâu khì khòaⁿ ian-tâng lāi, kó-jiân, to̍h ū 1 tē kim-á lak tī i tōa-thúi--ni̍h!

Well! she was off with it in a moment, and ran and ran till she came to the apple tree, when she heard the witch-woman behind her. So she cried as her sister had done:

“Apple tree! Apple tree, hide me

So the old witch can’t find me,

For if she does she’ll break my bones,

Or bury me under the garden stones.”

Só͘-pái,伊sûi to̍h kā hit袋金á the̍h--leh做伊soan,一直走一直走,走去到蘋果樹hia ê時,伊聽tio̍h女術士已經tī伊kha-chiah後。伊to̍h學in小妹án-ne hoah講:

「蘋果樹!蘋果樹,kā我chhàng ho͘好

hō͘ hit ê老女術士chhōe我無,

我nā去ho͘ chhōe--tio̍h,伊to̍h ē斷我ê骨,

A̍h無to̍h是kā我tâi tī花園á ê石頭ē底ut。」

Só͘-pái, i sûi to̍h kā hit tē kim-á the̍h--leh chò i soan, it-ti̍t cháu it-ti̍t cháu, cháu khì kàu phōng-kó-chhiū hia ê sî, i thiaⁿ tio̍h lú-su̍t-sū í-keng tī i kha-chiah-āu. I to̍h o̍h in sió-mōe án-ne hoah kóng:

“Phōng-kó-chhiū! Phōng-kó-chhiū, kā góa chhàng ho͘ hó

Hō͘ hit ê lāu lú-su̍t-sū chhōe góa bô,

Góa nā khì ho͘ chhōe--tio̍h, i to̍h ē tn̄g góa ê kut,

A̍h bô to̍h sī kā góa tâi tī hoe-hn̂g-á ê chio̍h-thâu ē-té ut.”

But the apple tree said:

“No room here! I’ve too many apples.”

M̄-koh phōng-kó-chhiū ìn kóng:

“Bô ūi--ā-lah! Góa chia siuⁿ chē phōng-kó--ah.”

So she had to run on; and when the witch-woman on her broomstick came flying by and called:

“O Tree of mine! Tree of mine!

Have you seen a naughty little maid

With a willy willy wag and a great big bag,

Who’s stolen my money—all I had?”

Só͘-pái伊to̍h kan-na ē-tàng繼續衝;ah hit ê女術士飛到tè ê時hoah講:

伊偷the̍h我ê錢,koh 1遍lóng總the̍h!」

Só͘-pái i to̍h kan-na ē-tàng kè-sio̍k chhiong; ah hit ê lú-su̍t-sū poe kàu-tè ê sî hoah kóng:

“Góa ê chhiū-á! Góa ê chhiū-á ôe!

Lí kám ū khòaⁿ tio̍h 1 ê chiān-thâng ê sè-hàn chŏ͘-kán-á,

Kha-chhng-hoe iô--leh iô--leh koh phāiⁿ 1 kha tōa-tē,

I thau the̍h góa ê chîⁿ, koh 1 piàn lóng-chóng the̍h!”

The apple tree replied:

“Yes, mother dear,

She’s gone down there.”

Phōng-kó-chhiū ìn kóng:

“Ū neh, chhin-ài ê a-pô,

I cháu ùi hit pêng--khì-ah.”

Then the witch-woman went after her, caught her, gave her a thorough good beating, took the bag of money away from her, and sent her home without a penny payment for all her dusting, and sweeping, and brushing, and cleaning.

Sòa--lòe,女術士to̍h tòe tī伊後壁,ka掠--起-來,kā伊phah kah鮮尺鮮尺,koh kā hit袋錢the̍h--轉-來,了後to̍h hiàm伊轉厝,ah hia-ê chhéng eng-ia,掃土脚,lù物件,piàⁿ厝內ê工錢,伊連1角銀to無la̍p--伊。

Sòa--lòe, lú-su̍t-sū to̍h tòe tī i āu-piah, ka lia̍h--khí-lâi, kā i phah kah chhiⁿ-chhioh chhiⁿ-chhioh, koh kā hit tē chîⁿ the̍h--tńg-lâi, liáu-āu to̍h hiàm i tńg chhù, ah hia-ê chhéng eng-ia, sàu thô͘-kha, lù mi̍h-kiāⁿ, piàⁿ chhù-lāi ê kang-chîⁿ, i liân 1 kak-gîn to bô la̍p--i.
