The Golden Ball
Once upon a time there lived two lasses, who were sisters, and as they came from the fair they saw a right handsome young man standing at a house door before them. They had never seen such a handsome young man before. He had gold on his cap, gold on his finger, gold on his neck, gold at his waist! And he had a golden ball in each hand. He gave a ball to each lass, saying she was to keep it; but if she lost it, she was to be hanged.
金球
Éng過,有2 ê姑娘á,in是1對姊妹á,in ùi商展beh轉厝ê時,看tio̍h 1 ê有夠緣投ê少年人,khiā tī in頭前ê 1間厝門口。In 2 ê從來to m̄-bat看過chiah-nī-á緣投ê少年人。 伊hō͘ in 2 ê姑娘á sûi人1粒金球,交帶in to̍h ài ka顧ho͘好;nā是去ho͘ phah-ka-la̍uh--去,in to̍h ē hông吊--死。
Kim kiû
Éng-kòe, ū 2 ê ko͘-niû-á, in sī 1 tùi chí-mōe-á, in ùi siong-tián beh tńg chhù ê sî, khòaⁿ tio̍h 1 ê ū-kàu iân-tâu ê siàu-liân-lâng, khiā tī in thâu-chêng ê 1 keng chhù mn̂g-kháu. In 2 ê chiông-lâi to m̄-bat khòaⁿ kòe chiah-nī-á iân-tâu ê siàu-liân-lâng. I ê bō-á téng ū kim-á chng-thāⁿ, chéng-thâu-á téng ū kòa kim-á, ām-kún-á téng ū phoa̍h kim-á, io--ni̍h koh ū hâ kim-á! I ê siang-chhiú--ni̍h mā lóng ū 1 lia̍p kim-kiû. I hō͘ in 2 ê ko͘-niû-á sûi lâng 1 lia̍p kim-kiû, kau-tài in to̍h ài ka kò͘ ho͘ hó; nā sī khì ho͘ phah-ka-la̍uh--khì, in to̍h ē hông tiàu--sí.
Now the youngest of the lasses lost her ball, and this is how. She was by a park paling, and she was tossing her ball, and it went up, and up, and up, till it went fair over the paling; and when she climbed to look for it, the ball ran along the green grass, and it ran right forward to the door of a house that stood there, and the ball went into the house and she saw it no more.
Taⁿ,in 2 ê姑娘á內底細漢--ê hit ê kā球創phàng見--ah,he tāi-chì是án-ne:伊tī 1 ê花園ê籬笆邊,khian伊ê球teh chhit-thô,球ná khian ná koân,ná khian ná koân,尾--á soah飛ùi籬笆對面--去;伊peh起lih籬笆beh chhōe球ê時,球soah liàn過青青ê草phiâⁿ,直直liàn去1棟厝ê門脚口,koh liàn入去厝--ni̍h,來to̍h無khoàiⁿ--ah。
Taⁿ, in 2 ê ko͘-niû-á lāi-té sè-hàn--ê hit ê kā kiû chhòng phàng-kiàn--ah, he tāi-chì sī án-ne: i tī 1 ê hoe-hn̂g ê lî-pa piⁿ, khian i ê kiû teh chhit-thô, kiû ná khian ná koân, ná khian ná koân, bóe--á soah poe ùi lî-pa tùi-bīn--khì; i peh khí-lih lî-pa beh chhōe kiû ê sî, kiû soah liàn kòe chheⁿ-chheⁿ ê chháu-phiâⁿ, ti̍t-ti̍t liàn khì 1 tòng chhù ê mn̂g-kha-kháu, koh liàn ji̍p-khì chhù--ni̍h, lâi to̍h bô khoàiⁿ--ah.
So she was taken away to be hanged by the neck till she was dead, because she had lost her ball.
Só͘-pái,伊to̍h hông lia̍h--走,koh來to̍h ē hông吊頷頸吊到無khùi,因為伊kā伊ê球創phàng見--ah。
Só͘-pái, i to̍h hông lia̍h--cháu, koh lâi to̍h ē hông tiàu ām-kún tiàu kàu bô khùi, in-ūi i kā i ê kiû chhòng phàng-kiàn--ah.
But the lass had a sweetheart, and he said he would go and get the ball. So he went to the park gate, but ‘twas shut; then he climbed the railing, and when he got to the top of it an old woman rose up out of the ditch before him and said that if he wanted to get the ball he must sleep three nights in the house: so he said he would.
M̄-koh chit ê姑娘á有1 ê愛人á,伊講伊ē去kā hit粒球the̍h--轉-來。Só͘-pái伊to̍h去hit ê花園ê大門口,m̄-koh門是關--leh-ê;來伊to̍h peh起lih籬笆,to̍h tī伊peh到siāng koân ê所在ê時,1 ê老阿婆ùi伊面頭前ê溝á--ni̍h浮--起-來,ka講,nā是伊想beh the̍h tio̍h球,伊to̍h ài tī hit間厝內底睏3暝:伊to̍h ìn好。
M̄-koh chit ê ko͘-niû-á ū 1 ê ài-jîn-á, i kóng i ē khì kā hit lia̍p kiû the̍h--tńg-lâi. Só͘-pái i to̍h khì hit ê hoe-hn̂g ê tōa-mn̂g-kháu, m̄-koh mn̂g sī koaiⁿ--leh-ê; lâi i to̍h peh khí-lih lî-pa, to̍h tī i peh kàu siāng koân ê só͘-chāi ê sî, 1 ê lāu a-pô ùi i bīn-thâu-chêng ê kau-á--ni̍h phû--khí-lâi, ka kóng, nā sī i siūⁿ beh the̍h tio̍h kiû, i to̍h ài tī hit keng chhù lāi-té khùn 3 mê: i to̍h ìn hó.
Well! when it was evening, he went into the house, and looked everywhere for the ball, but he could not find it, nor any one in the house at all; but when night came on he thought he heard bogles moving about in the courtyard; so he looked out o’ window, and, sure enough, the yard was full of them!
To̍h án-ne,暗頭á伊to̍h入去hit間厝,四界chhōe hit粒球,m̄-koh lóng chhōe無,厝內mā lóng無人;不而過到半暝á,伊感覺講伊有聽tio̍h埕--ni̍h有mǹg-sǹg--ê teh lōa-lōa-sô;伊to̍h ùi窗á hia去看外口,koh有影,kui ê埕--ni̍h lóng是mǹg-sǹg--ê!
To̍h án-ne, àm-thâu-á i to̍h ji̍p-khì hit keng chhù, sì-kè chhōe hit lia̍p kiû, m̄-koh lóng chhōe bô, chhù lāi mā lóng bô lâng; put-jî-kò kàu pòaⁿ-mê-á, i kám-kak kóng i ū thiaⁿ tio̍h tiâⁿ--ni̍h ū mǹg-sǹg--ê teh lōa-lōa-sô; i to̍h ùi thang-á hia khì khòaⁿ gōa-kháu, koh ū-iáⁿ, kui ê tiâⁿ--ni̍h lóng sī mǹg-sǹg--ê!
Presently he heard steps coming upstairs, so he hid behind the door, and was as still as a mouse. Then in came a big giant five times as tall as the lad, and looked around; but seeing nothing he went to the window and bowed himself to look out; and as he bowed on his elbows to see the bogles in the yard, the lad stepped behind him, and with one blow of his sword he cut him in twain, so that the top part of him fell in the yard, and the bottom part remained standing looking out of the window.
無jōa久伊to̍h聽tio̍h有peh樓梯--起-來ê脚步聲,伊chŏaⁿ走去門後壁bih,像niáu鼠á án-ne kek ho͘無聲無soeh。Chit時,有1 ê身長是chit ê少年--ê ê 5倍koân ê巨人--入-來,四界看四界siòng;m̄-koh伊啥to̍h無看--tio̍h,伊to̍h行去窗á邊,àⁿ落去看外口;to̍h tī伊kā手khiau thuh tī窗á門,探頭出去看埕--ni̍h ê mǹg-sǹg--ê ê時chūn,少年--ê ùi巨人kha-chiah後行--過,劍hut 1 ē to̍h kā伊chám做2 koe̍h,伊ê頂半身chŏaⁿ lak落去埕--ni̍h,ah下半身koh kán-ná原在khiā tī窗á口teh看外面。
Bô jōa kú i to̍h thiaⁿ tio̍h ū peh lâu-thui--khí-lâi ê kha-pō͘ siaⁿ, i chŏaⁿ cháu khì mn̂g āu-piah bih, chhiūⁿ niáu-chhí-á án-ne kek ho͘ bô-siaⁿ-bô-soeh. Chit-sî, ū 1 ê sin-tn̂g sī chit ê siàu-liân--ê ê 5 pōe koân ê kū-jîn--ji̍p-lâi, sì-kè khòaⁿ sì-kè siòng; m̄-koh i siáⁿ to̍h bô khòaⁿ--tio̍h, i to̍h kiâⁿ khì thang-á piⁿ, àⁿ lo̍h-khì khòaⁿ gōa-kháu; to̍h tī i kā chhiú-khiau thuh tī thang-á-mn̂g, thàm thâu chhut-khì khòaⁿ tiâⁿ--ni̍h ê mǹg-sǹg--ê ê sî-chūn, siàu-liân--ê ùi kū-jîn kha-chiah-āu kiâⁿ--kòe, kiàm hut 1 ē to̍h kā i chám chò 2 koe̍h, i ê téng pòaⁿ-sin chŏaⁿ lak lo̍h-khì tiâⁿ--ni̍h, ah ē pòaⁿ-sin koh kán-ná goân-chāi khiā tī thang-á-kháu teh khòaⁿ gōa-bīn.
Well! there was a great cry from the bogles when they saw half the giant come tumbling down to them, and they called out, “There comes half our master; give us the other half.”
Ái-io͘h!Hia ê mǹg-sǹg--ê看tio̍h巨人ê半身piàng落來到in面頭前ê時,in háu kah chiok大聲,koh hoah講:「Goán半ê主人來--ah;kā另外1半hō͘--goán。」
Ái-iò͘! Hia ê mǹg-sǹg--ê khòaⁿ tio̍h kū-jîn ê pòaⁿ-sin piàng lo̍h-lâi kàu in bīn-thâu-chêng ê sî, in háu kah chiok tōa-siaⁿ, koh hoah kóng: “Goán pòaⁿ ê chú-lâng lâi--ah; kā lēng-gōa 1 pòaⁿ hō͘--goán.”
Then the lad said, “It’s no use of thee, thou pair of legs, standing alone at the window, as thou hast no eye to see with, so go join thy brother”; and he cast the lower part of the giant after the top part. Now when the bogles had gotten all the giant they were quiet.
來少年--ê to̍h講:「你chit雙脚無khah-choa̍h,孤1 ê khiā tī窗á邊,mā無目睭thang看,去kah你ê兄哥做夥--lah。」伊to̍h kā巨人ê下半koe̍h phiaⁿ--出-去,ho͘ tòe頂半koe̍h ê後壁--去。Hia ê mǹg-sǹg--ê得tio̍h kui隻ê巨人了後,in to̍h lóng tiām--去-ah。
Lâi siàu-liân--ê to̍h kóng: “Lí chit siang kha bô-khah-choa̍h, ko͘ 1 ê khiā tī thang-á piⁿ, mā bô ba̍k-chiu thang khòaⁿ, khì kah lí ê hiaⁿ-ko chò-hóe--lah.” I to̍h kā kū-jîn ê ē pòaⁿ koe̍h phiaⁿ--chhut-khì, ho͘ tòe téng pòaⁿ koe̍h ê āu-piah--khì. Hia ê mǹg-sǹg--ê tit-tio̍h kui chiah ê kū-jîn liáu-āu, in to̍h lóng tiām--khì-ah.
Next night the lad went to sleep in the house again, and this time a second giant came in at the door, and as he came in the lad cut him in twain; but the legs walked on to the fire and went straight up the chimney.
Keh-ji̍t ĕng, siàu-liân--ê koh khì hit keng chhù kòe-mê, chit piàn, tē 2 ê kū-jîn ùi mn̂g--ji̍p-lâi, i tú kiâⁿ ji̍p mn̂g, siàu-liân--ê to̍h kā i phut chò 2 koe̍h; m̄-koh hit siang kha kè-sio̍k kiâⁿ ji̍p-khì piah-lô͘, ti̍t-chiap peh ùi ian-tâng-kóng--khí-lih.
“Go, get thee after thy legs,” said the lad to the head, and he cast the other half of the giant up the chimney.
Siàu-liân--ê tùi kū-jîn ê thâu kóng: “Khì--lah! Tòe lí ê kha--khì,” sòa--lòe mā kā kū-jîn ê téng pòaⁿ koe̍h tàn ji̍p-khì ian-tâng-kóng.
Now the third night nothing happened, so the lad got into bed; but before he went to sleep he heard the bogles striving under the bed, and he wondered what they were at. So he peeped, and saw that they had the ball there, and were playing with it, casting it to and fro.
Taⁿ第3暝,啥to̍h無發生,só͘-pái少年--ê to̍h peh起lih眠床beh睏--ah;m̄-koh tī伊睏--去進前,伊聽tio̍h mǹg-sǹg--ê tī眠床脚teh chhia-poa̍h-péng,伊真好玄in teh創啥。Só͘-pái伊to̍h ka偷看,看tio̍h講球to̍h tī in hia,in tng teh sńg球,phà-suh--過-來koh phà-suh--過-去。
Taⁿ tē 3 mê, siáⁿ to̍h bô hoat-seng, só͘-pái siàu-liân--ê to̍h peh khí-lih bîn-chhn̂g beh khùn--ah; m̄-koh tī i khùn--khì chìn-chêng, i thiaⁿ tio̍h mǹg-sǹg--ê tī bîn-chhn̂g kha teh chhia-poa̍h-péng, i chin hòⁿ-hiân in teh chhòng siáⁿ. Só͘-pái i to̍h ka thau-khòaⁿ, khòaⁿ tio̍h kóng kiû to̍h tī in hia, in tng teh sńg kiû, phà-suh--kòe-lâi koh phà-suh--kòe-khì.
Now after a time one of them thrust his leg out from under the bed, and quick as anything the lad brings his sword down, and cuts it off. Then another bogle thrust his arm out at t’other side of the bed, and in a twinkling the lad cuts that off too. So it went on, till at last he had maimed them all, and they all went off, crying and wailing, and forgot the ball! Then the lad got out of bed, found the ball, and went off at once to seek his true love.
Tāi-chì to̍h照chit-lō版路繼續行,直透到siōng尾伊kā hia ê mǹg-sǹg--ê lóng變做khôe脚pái手,kui tīn哀pē叫母哭kah悽慘落魄離開房間,soah kā球放bē記--ah!少年--ê sûi to̍h ùi眠床peh--起-來,chhōe tio̍h hit粒球,即時to̍h去chhōe伊ê真愛--ah。
Kòe 1-sî-á, ū 1 chiah mǹg-sǹg--ê kā kha ùi bîn-chhn̂g té chhun--chhut-lâi, siàu-liân--ê kha-chhiú koh put-chí-á kín, kiàm sûi phut--lo̍h-khì, tn̄g kha. Tāi-chì to̍h chiàu chit-lō pán-lō͘ kè-sio̍k kiâⁿ, ti̍t-thàu kàu siāng-bóe i kā hia ê mǹg-sǹg--ê lóng piàn-chò khôe-kha-pái-chhiú, kui tīn ai-pē-kiò-bú khàu kah chhi-chhám-lo̍k-phek lī-khui pâng-keng, soah kā kiû pàng bē-kì--ah! Now the lass had been taken to York to be hanged; she was brought out on the scaffold, and the hangman said, “Now, lass, thou must hang by the neck till thou be’st dead.” But she cried out:
Taⁿ hit ê姑娘á去hông押去Yò͘-khuh beh ka吊--死;伊hông chhōa去絞台,處刑人講:「Chit-má,姑娘á,你ài hông吊頷頸,直透到你無khùi。」M̄-koh姑娘á大聲hoah講:
Taⁿ hit ê ko͘-niû-á khì hông ah khì Yò͘-khuh beh ka tiàu--sí; i hông chhōa khì ká-tâi, chhú-hêng-lâng kóng: “Chit-má, ko͘-niû-á, lí ài hông tiàu ām-kún, ti̍t-thàu kàu lí bô-khùi.” M̄-koh ko͘-niû-á tōa-siaⁿ hoah kóng:
“Stop, stop, I think I see my mother coming!
O mother, hast thou brought my golden ball
And come to set me free?”
「Tòng--leh,且tòng--leh,我ká-ná看tio̍h goán老母來--ā!

And the mother answered:
“I’ve neither brought thy golden ball

But I have come to see thee hung
Upon this gallows-tree.”
In老母ìn講:

In lāu-bú ìn kóng:
“Góa bô kā lí ê kim-kiû chah--kòe-lâi

Then the hangman said, “Now, lass, say thy prayers for thou must die.” But she said:
“Stop, stop, I think I see my father coming!
O father, hast thou brought my golden ball
And come to set me free?”

Liáu-āu, chhú-hêng-lâng kóng: “Hó--ah, ko͘-niû-á, siōng lí ê kî-tó-sû, in-ūi lí koat-tēng ài sí.” M̄-koh ko͘-niû-á kóng:
“Tán--leh, sió-tán--leh, góa ká-ná khòaⁿ tio̍h goán lāu-pē lâi--ā!
A-pâ ôe, lí kám sī ū chah góa ê kim-kiû lâi,
beh lâi pàng góa chū-iû?”
And the father answered:
“I’ve neither brought thy golden ball
Nor come to set thee free,
But I have come to see thee hung
Upon this gallows-tree.”
In老pē ìn講:

In lāu-pē ìn kóng:
“Góa bô kā lí ê kim-kiû chah--kòe-lâi
Mā m̄ sī beh lâi pàng lí chū-iû,
M̄-koh góa sī lâi chia khòaⁿ lí hông tiàu

Then the hangman said, “Hast thee done thy prayers? Now, lass, put thy head into the noose.”
Liáu-āu, chhú-hêng-lâng kóng: “Lí kî-tó soah--ah bē? Hó--ah, ko͘-niû-á, kā lí ê thâu chhun ji̍p-khì liù-sok-á--ni̍h.”
But she answered, “Stop, stop, I think I see my brother coming!” And again she sang her little verse, and the brother sang back the same words. And so with her sister, her uncle, her aunt, and her cousin. But they all said the same:
M̄-koh姑娘á講:「Mài--lah,m̄-thang--lah,我ká-ná看tio̍h goán小弟來--ā!」伊kāng款koh吟1遍伊hit條短詩,m̄-koh in小弟mā ìn伊kāng款ê話。 M-koh in ê回應mā lóng kāng款:

Then the hangman said, “I will stop no longer, thou’rt making game of me. Thou must be hung at once.”
的確to̍h ài sûi kā你吊--起-來。」
Liáu-āu, chhú-hêng-lâng kóng, “Góa bē koh tán--lí-ah, lí teh kă chhòng-tī. Tek-khak to̍h ài sûi kā lí tiàu--khí-lâi.”
But now, at long last, she saw her sweetheart coming through the crowd, so she cried to him:
M̄-koh chit-má,姑娘á總算是看tio̍h伊ê愛人á ùi人tīn--ni̍h過--來,só͘-pái伊kā處刑人hoah講:
M̄-koh chit-má, ko͘-niû-á chóng-sǹg-sī khòaⁿ tio̍h i ê ài-jîn-á ùi lâng-tīn--ni̍h kòe--lâi, só͘-pái i kā chhú-hêng-lâng hoah kóng:
“Stop, stop, I see my sweetheart coming!

“Thêng, kín thêng--lo̍h-lâi, góa khòaⁿ tio̍h góa ê ài-jîn-á lâi--ā!
Sim-ài--ê, lí kám sī ū chah góa ê kim-kiû lâi,

Then her sweetheart held up her golden ball and cried:
Sòa--落-來,伊ê愛人á kā伊ê金球the̍h ho͘ koân-koân,大聲hoah講:
Sòa--lo̍h-lâi, i ê ài-jîn-á kā i ê kim-kiû the̍h ho͘ koân-koân, tōa-siaⁿ hoah kóng:
“Aye, I have brought to thee thy golden ball

「Tio̍h,我kā你ê金球chah--來-ah

“Tio̍h, góa kā lí ê kim-kiû chah--lâi-ah

So he took her home, then and there, and they lived happy ever after.
